As stated, God as Father is Holy and unable to be in the presence of sin. For humanity to spiritually return to God it is necessary that a man become the ‘way’ of reconciliation unto Him. Therein lies the rub. The incompatible presence of Holy God and unholy man. For this reason, the Spirit of the trinitarian Godhead became a man through unification with an (ovarian) seed of a woman, producing a child of God and humanity. In this way a specific man became available and present to serve as the needed spiritual transducer for humanity’s redemption. From the time of Abraham, God instituted and required sacrifice as a covenantal sign between the two (Gen 15:10, 17:9). This is no less true for the redemption of sin filled humanity. A sacrifice is still required to open the path of salvation. Such a sacrifice must fulfill the needs and requirements of both God and humanity. Only one as spiritually holy as God and yet completely human can fulfill these dual requirements. It is the Spirit of God manifested as a human through the birth of Jesus of Nazareth who simultaneously provides this unique vessel of sacrifice and salvation (Romans 8:1-4). Because His Spirit is Holy and because Jesus was a man who lived among others, He and He alone is the sole possessor of the character and nature qualifying him and him alone, to serve in our place on the cross of death. He was/is the only sacrifice acceptable of God’s Holy requirement for salvation. He served in our place to pay the ransom death holds for humanity’s release. Jesus alone is way of salvation and the light on the path to God’s eternal kingdom. Jesus voluntarily became our sacrifice to fulfill God’s covenant requirement of guaranteed salvation and eternal life. Join me next time for Part 8 when we look at Jesus’ roles as Mediator and Advocate.
