WALL FLOWER

Another Junior High Dance

sitting, waiting

hoping someone will,

praying no one does,

ask me to dance

I’ve been practicing at home

in front of the mirror

with my mother and little sis

Trying to get the steps right

in tempo, in sequence

There goes Cindy

she’s such a show off

If I had a big sister

I’d know what to say

and the best way

to sweep back my hair

effortlessly

with the swish of my head

Why do I have to be here tonight?

Everyone is having such a good time,

Except the four of us sitting here

Four alone, together

Side glances between us

waiting to see

who may be first

if at all,

and God forbid

who may be last

or worse,

left sitting here

alone and cursed

while everyone else

is dancing

Oh my God!

Here comes Charles the Geek

He’s coming straight at us

Oh no, he’s going to ask

one of us to dance

Oh no, he’s heading

for Linda, on my left

Oh no, he’s about to ask

Oh yes Charles,

I’d love to dance with you
